Research topics

(Earth, Planets and Environments - LGLTPE)

The aim of the work of this laboratory is to understand the formation of the earth and its evolution, as well as the appearance of life and its development. This field of research goes from the formation of the solar system to exobiology, from the study of the formation of mountain ranges to the study of paleo-environments, from dynamics of the mantle and the earth's core to the dynamics of other planets. The field, experimentation, analysis and supercomputing are exploited, as is intense interaction with other disciplines: physics, chemistry, biology and astrophysics. The laboratory's experimental facilities are particularly well-provided in the fields of isotopic geochemistry (heavy and light elements, tracings, dating materials), non-destructive analysis (spectroscopy, microscopy), physics of extreme conditions (diamond presses and anvils) and biogeochemical analysis. A flotilla of drones enables us to carry out geomorphological monitoring, coast dynamics and natural risks. Thanks to mesoscale computer resources, we can develop ab-initio calculations, digital simulations of planetary evolutions, and process seismological databases. Finally, the laboratory manages the palaeontological collections of Lyon that make up one of the top university collections in the world, with almost 10 million samples.

The laboratory has been divided into 4 main areas:
• Earth and planets
• Surface and lithosphere
• Palaeoenvironments and biodiversity
• Primitive life
